Formula 1 continues to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic, as the Strategy Group discusses changes for upcoming seasons. Giving McLarean another engine for this season is a good start, but this has me a bit worried:

“Exciting and innovative” changes to the qualifying and race formats for 2016

I don’t really see how they can change the race, aside from standing restarts, which I think is a crazy idea. But change qualifying? It’s already more exciting than the race.

“An easing off of power unit penalties (such as those issued in Austria to McLaren and Red Bull) to be voted on via FAX and approved next week by the World Motor Sport Council”

Wat.

F1: Leading the way in 1980s technology.

I wish.

They’ve been talking about doing a GP2 style feature/sprint race thing on and off for years. I hope they’re not implying they’d have the sprint establish the feature starting order...though that’d meet the word and intent of the bullet point...............

Their format is good right now...not where they should be focusing.

That would actually be an improvement. They have the turbos, we just need bigger tires, more boost, flames, wastegate noises, and full width rear wings.

FWIW, contemporary F1 cars are much faster (and more reliable) than they were in the 80s, despite the smaller wings and turbos. Also the racing is a lot closer and more competitive, believe it or not. I have several seasons of 80s and 90s f1 in my video folder. The actual racing isn’t very good.

There’s no denying that, and I remember, I watched it back then. Much as current WRC cars are faster than Group B, but everyone waxes nostalgic about the old cars. Still, the spectacle could stand some improvement. I hate DRS because it makes for “gimme” passes. Do some more aero work to minimize the dirty air behind the car (single element wings, perhaps, or simpler diffusers), and let them pass on their own. The engine technology needs to be relevant to road cars, but give them an absolute fuel flow limit and engine package dimension limit (to enable it to fit multiple chassis) and let the manufacturers come up with solutions.

I’ll echo jariten’s sentiments, in that I think that one of the few things that F1 is doing very well right now is the formatting. Qualifying format is set up very well and makes sense, and showcases great competition and has shown quite a few really exciting moments. Not sure what they'd change about race formats, but it's fine as it is. I'm afraid changing something about the way a race is run or formatted would be stupid, I know Indy car has done stuff like that before (and continues to do it occasionally) and I don't care for it.
